Mark Sawicki - Visual Effects

We recently teamed up Masters POV at the Cinematography Conference 2012. Mark Sawicki was one of the special guest speaker/instructor at the event.

Mark covered several topics from the event, and he also touched up on lighting. Before his transition into digital, Visual Effects cameraman Mark Sawicki documented the old style craftsmanship of the traditional optical cameraman. This program pays homage to an exciting craft that was handed down from one camera person to another in the last age of apprenticeship.

In the workshop “Stop Motion” Mark Sawicki demonstrated the cinematography considerations for two stop motion commercials including Green screen set up and exposure, creating synthetic shadows, front light back light and crowd replication.

After the event, we asked Mark a few questions:

With new technology constantly changing, especially, how we acquire images, how important is it to light your projects?

Proper lighting is the most important aspect in the creation of the image. It creates the master template onto which we hang all the rest of the elements that make up the visual aspects of storytelling. Lighting is so much more than merely obtaining an exposure. New camera products touting the ability to shoot in extremely low light conditions gives the false impression that the use of lights is unnecessary. Nothing could be farther from the truth or more damaging to the art form.

What’s your thoughts on story-telling with lighting?

We are surrounded by light every waking moment of our lives. It effects us in so many subtle and invisible ways by creating impressions, moods and feelings that touch us time and again in our adventure through life. The cinematographer orchestrates the music of light to tell stories with pictures that help define and focus the triumphs and tragedies of the human condition.

What would you say to new up-and-coming filmmakers about lighting and story-telling?

Young filmmakers today get very focused on narrow aspects of the movie making process. Many times it is all about directing the actors and and other aspects of the process seem to get short shrift. "Everything" in movie making needs attention starting with the story. Hair and makeup, costumes, set design, acting and camera are all vitally important and it is the lighting that brings all those visual elements together to make an effective photoplay.

This year, the president of Cinemills was part of the Oscars 2012. Carlos De Mattos, and his good friend Brian Ross, walked the red carpet amongst the Hollywood elite.

Carlos has a history with the Academy Awards, in the past, he has won an Oscar for technical achievement.

The Cinemills LEDZ lights was also part of the red carpet event, lighting up the talent from the E! channel.

He is currently talking about film testing, and the important role of the cinematographer. He still wants to share to the world great story-telling and illumination, more importantly, the values or mastering the craft.

Karl Walter Lindenlaub, ASC, BVK, has photographed a variety of features from summer blockbuster movies to small, intimate dramas and romantic comedies, known for such pictures as INDEPENDENCE DAY, CHRONICLES OF NARNIA: PRINCE CASPIAN, and STARGATE. He has a lot of experience with complex effects heavy movies and commercials, that he will share with you in his workshop and seminar.

In his workshop “Lighting on Stage for Day and Night”, Karl Walter Lindenlaub will demonstrate how to create different looks for an apartment set. These tools give the cinematographer ways to support a dramatic story by bringing a set on stage to life. Different ways to create sun light, soft day light, as well as Dusk and Night light will be discussed, and as time permits, demonstrated.

One of Gale's biggest project from 2006-2011 was, 'House M.D.', where he worked as Director of Photography for the t.v. series.

At HD DSLR Workshops they inspire as well as educate. The students leave with new skills, and the inspiration to use those skills. This is accomplished by the expert techniques and practices that Gale Tattersall, and his team, imparts during the course of the workshops. With the emphasis on a hands-on approach students will learn to navigate real world situations rather than learning in idealized, insulated scenarios. Cinemills Launches New Website 2012

Cinemills has recently launched the new website design. The project took roughly about four months.

The design team, managed by, Daniel De Mattos, oversaw the project on the daily basis. There are various upgrades to the website. A few in particular; was incorporating more visuals with the equipment, and supporting it with researched technical specifications on many of the products offered.

Cinemills' goal is to communicate to our customers our dedication to providing quality representation of all our products and services, as well as, the tools used to promote then. Indie Filmmakers Light Their Scenes with Cinemills

A group of independent filmmakers recently rented the Cinemills lighting kit, to tell their story on film. The film was mostly captured indoors, and Cinemills lighting helped create the mood.

Last month we had the world famous Jabbawockeez members pass by the Cinemills headquarters, in Burbank, to talk about lighting and design.

The group is famous for winning the first competition in Americas Best Dance Crew, in MTV. They now headline a major nightly Las Vegas show at the Monte Carlo casino.

The Jabbawockeez were talking about the importance of lighting in their show. Since Cinemills has been lighting up the motion picture and television for more than 30 years, we saw potential opportunities for future collaboration.

George Stupar With Mobile Image - Lights PBS Production, "Madison Heights", With Cinemills Silver Bullet

Cinemills would like to thank one of our valued customers for using the Silver Bullet 200w Single Ended. George Stupar and his production company, Mobile Image, has been part of PBS' "Madison Heights". He's also used the lights with Chimeras for documentary interviews. He recently stopped by the Cinemills head quarters to pick up the light fixture, and we asked how he uses the lights.

"Nice lights, thanks for taking the place over and making it right," says, George Stupar. Mobile Image has been using Cinemills lights for more than 10 years, and they currently use (2) PAR 200w and 575w. They've been using the lights for educational documentary series, and dramatic series.

The Cape Verde islands have an interesting combination of West African and Portuguese influences, and the European-style architecture of the buildings blends beautifully with the traditional African scenery. The islands were colonized by the Portuguese seafarers in the fifteenth century and used as trading outposts for shipping and whaling. Known for its mournful native music called "morna," Boa Vista is an ideal place for enjoying Cape Verde holidays that combine activities with cultural experiences. The island boasts an ideal habitat for a large variety of wildlife and is home to the endangered loggerhead turtle, which makes it one of the most important places in the world for turtle conservation. Boa Vista is the third-largest island in Cape Verde, with more than 30 miles of white sandy beaches—a perfect destination for tourists in need of a relaxing and secluded beach holiday.

Santiago Island is also a great spot for diving, surfing, and fishing. The Tarrafal beach is regarded as the best place to dive and surf, but other well-known surfing spots in Santiago include the southeast coast and Ponte de Lobo. This volcanic island is also known for great hiking opportunities. With an elevation of more than 4,560 feet, Pico do Antonio is an excellent hiking spot for adventure-seekers.

Another great island for hiking is Fogo, which is located between Santiago and Brava islands. This destination is well-known for its active volcanic mountain called Pico de Fogo, which last erupted in 1995 and forced the island inhabitants to evacuate their homes. The 9,314-foot peak provides excellent trails, but hikers are advised to seek the help of an organized local tour due to the perils of its active volcano.

Travelers looking for unexplored Cape Verde islands can head straight to Santo Antao. Much of the terrain of this island is unexplored, but the northeast corner provides nice hiking opportunities. In addition, the Ponto do Sol area of Santo Antao is great for hiking, scuba diving, and rock climbing. Sal Island is also regarded as a surfer's dream destination, but whichever island you choose to visit, you're certain to have a wonderful trip to Cape Verde.

In 1998 from the Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey, as Truman Burbank, carrying a Cinemills Light. In the movie, the critical convergance of his life was when he realized his whole life was a false reality. In this scene, represented in still image, was a result of a Cinemills light falling off the grid. Here he is looking up into the sky, and Cinemills light provides an epiphany.
